Big First Inning Too Much For Hoosiers To Overcome In Loss To Iowa
April 4, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Just like the game prior, the Iowa Hawkeyes used a big first inning at the plate on their way to a 12-1 victory over the Hoosiers in five innings on Sunday at Pearl Field. Sophomore Samantha Berenter recorded a RBI single to right field in the second inning to drive in the only run for Indiana (7-21, 0-2 Big Ten).
Junior pitcher Sara Olson (4-9) started in the circle but was not able to record an out before Iowa (18-13-1, 4-0 Big Ten) put two runs on the board. Freshman Jessica Dobson came on in relief but the Hawkeyes continued to swing the bats well and when the inning was over, Iowa had an 8-0 lead.
The Hoosiers showed their resiliency in the top of the second inning, as Olson led off with a bullet to the wall in center field for a long single. Senior Jennifer Gluecker followed with a double to the gap in right center to put a pair of runners in scoring position. Berenter stepped in with one out and delivered a soft single to right field to score one run, but the rally would end there as the next two batters were retired.
Iowa came back with four runs in the bottom of the third inning to make it 12-1 and Hawkeye pitcher Amanda Zust (10-6) closed out the game to pick up the win.
Glueckert finished the game with two hits, the fifth time this season she has collected at two hits and her seventh multi-hit game of the season.
Dobson finished with 2.0 innings of work and allowed six runs on seven hits and one walk before freshman Cassie Loweth came on and allowed just one run on two hits over the final two innings.
Indiana will be back in action on Wednesday against No. 2 Michigan at the IU Softball Field. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and game two will follow approximately 20 minutes after the completion of game one.
