Golden Gophers Take Game Two From Hoosiers
April 4, 2008
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Indiana Hoosiers both collected six hits and committed two errors in the second game of a day-night doubleheader at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium on Friday. But Minnesota took advantage of the Hoosier miscues in the third inning on their way to a 5-2 win in game two.
The two teams were originally scheduled to play one game on Friday and one game on Saturday but due to the rain in the forecast for Saturday, the teams agreed to play a doubleheader on Friday to make sure the games were played.
Senior center fielder Julia Hamilton did all she could to get the Hoosier offenses started with her three hits in the game and two runs scored. She also prevented two big innings with dazzling plays in the field.
Sara Olson (2-6) took the loss for Indiana by giving up five runs, three earned, on four hits while Katie Dalen (7-6) picked up the complete game win for Minnesota by allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits and five strikeouts.
In the first inning it was the Hoosiers' who took advantage of a Minnesota throwing error that set up the first run of the game. Hamilton started the game with a single and moved to second when Kelli Ritchison dropped down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by Katie Dalen. Dalen then turned and threw to first base before the second baseman could get there to cover the base to allow Hamilton to get to third. Tory Yamaguchi followed one out later with a sacrifice bunt to drive in Hamilton and give IU a 1-0 lead.
Minnesota (21-10, 4-2 Big Ten) got an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score before a decisive four-run third gave them a 5-2 lead.
In the visitor's half of the third, Hamilton surprised the Minnesota left fielder with a drive over her head that rolled all the way to the wall to allow the speedy Hamilton to reach third base standing up to leadoff. Two batters later, Emily Bergeson lined a pitch right at the right fielder that came up firing to the plate to get a tagging Hamilton. It took a nifty slide to the outside of home plate but Hamilton was able to avoid the tag and touch the plate with her hand for the second Indiana run in the game.
Hamilton also made two tremendous diving catches to rob the Golden Gophers of hits in the game. The first came to end the bottom of the third inning when Shannon Stemper hit a line drive into the right-center field. Hamilton had a beat on it the whole way and timed her dive perfectly to make the fully extended catch. The second came in the bottom of the sixth inning on a fly ball into shallow center field where she made a sliding catch just before the ball was about to hit the ground.
The Hoosiers will continue their Big Ten road trip on Sunday with a doubleheader at Wisconsin starting at 12 p.m. Central. Both games against Wisconsin are scheduled to be aired live on the Big Ten Network.
