BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Indiana junior third baseman Amanda Wagner's second career two home run game helped lead the Indiana Hoosiers (19-17, 4-4 Big Ten) to a 9-5 win and a doubleheader sweep of the Purdue Boilermakers at the IU Softball Field. It is the fourth straight victory over the Purdue (23-12, 6-2 Big Ten), the longest winning streak against Purdue since the 1996 and 1997 seasons.
Wagner hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning, giving the Hoosiers a 5-2 lead. She followed that up in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, her eighth home run of the season. Wagner finished 4-for-4 with four RBI, the first four hit game for an IU player since Breanna Saucedo did it on April 16, 2011, against Wisconsin. Wagner also extended her streak of reaching base safely to 12 games.
Lora Olson (11-10) earned the win after pitching 3.1 innings of relief, giving up four hits and one earned run. Meaghan Murphy started the game pitching 3.2 innings allowing four hits and four earned runs.
The Hoosiers scored a lone run in the first inning on a bases loaded walk issued to Cassie Gogreve. Purdue answered with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take the 2-1 lead.
Then in the bottom of the second inning, Samantha Heyman doubled to right center and with two outs, an error allowed Heyman to come around to score to make it 2-0. So after the inning should have been over, IU continued to pile on the runs as Cawley reached on an infield single before Wagner followed with her three-run blast to make it 5-2 after two innings.
The third inning started with a double to right center off the bat of Cassie Gogreve
and Samantha Berenter
followed with a double of her own to increase the IU lead to 6-2. Shelby Gogreve
walked and a groundout on the infield by Heyman allowed both runners to move into scoring position. That's when Abraham singled back up the middle to push home two more runs to put the Indiana lead at 8-2.
Purdue once again came back with a pair of runs thanks to Erika Petruzzi's second home run of the game, making it 8-4.
Wagner came up to leadoff the fourth inning and smashed the first pitch she saw to right field for a solo home run to increase the IU lead to 9-4.
The Boilers added a run in the top of the sixth inning but could get no closer against Olson and the Hoosiers secured the doubleheader sweep.
With the sweep on Saturday Indiana clinches a full point in the Smithville Crimson and Gold Cup, putting the Hoosiers ahead 9-6 with four points remaining.
The Hoosiers will go for the series sweep tomorrow at 1:00pm at IU Softball Field.
Indiana collected 10 hits in both games on Saturday ... the last time an IU player hit two home runs in a game was Sara Olson on April 2, 2011, at Michigan ... the last time IU scored nine runs in a Big Ten game was April 13, 2011, against Ohio State ... Wagner's other two home run game came against Boise State during her freshman year.
