No. 2 Michigan Powers Past Hoosiers in Game Two
April 8, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers got back-to-back bunt singles to start the bottom of the first and worked that into a run but eventually No. 2 Michigan got their bats going and ended up with a 14-1 victory in five innings at the IU Softball Field.
Michigan (28-5, 5-0 Big Ten) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning but this time the Hoosiers (7-23, 0-4 Big Ten) had an answer. Freshman Breanna Saucedo and senior Kelli Ritchison put down perfect bunt singles to start the bottom of the frame. Jennifer Glueckert stepped in next and drilled a single to right field to score Saucedo and cut the Michigan lead to 2-1. However, the rally would end there as Sara Olson popped out and Cassie Gogreve grounded into a double play to end the inning.
The Wolverines added three more runs in the second inning thanks to a pair of Indiana errors. In the third inning, Michigan scored its sixth run of the game on a sacrifice fly to center field, despite a good relay throw to the plate by Saucedo.
Then in the fourth inning, the wheels came off for the Hoosiers and Michigan rallied for eight runs, six of which were unearned. All totaled, only five of the 14 runs scored by Michigan were earned in the game, thanks to a total of three Indiana errors.
Monica Wright (2-8) started for Indiana and went an inning-plus, allowing five runs, two earned, on five hits. Jessica Dobson pitched the next two innings before Olson came on with two on in the fourth. Dobson gave up three runs on four hits and Olson surrendered six runs, all unearned, on three hits and three walks. And in the fifth, Cassie Loweth came on to allow just one hit in her scoreless inning of work.
Indiana continues conference play at home this weekend against Michigan State, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. Live audio and Gametracker will be available on IUHoosiers.com.
