Hoosiers Prevail At Indiana State, 4-1
April 9, 2008
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana softball team continued its recent string of success against non-conference opponents on Wednesday with a 4-1 win over the Indiana State Sycamores at Price Field. Tory Yamaguchi and Emily Bergeson both had base hits that scored two runs in support of Monica Wright in the circle.
Wright improves to 8-10 in the circle this year for the Hoosiers (11-26) with the complete game win. She went the distance for the 10th time this season, allowing one run on seven hits and striking out six. Meagan McCurdy (6-9) also went the distance for the Sycamores (11-20-1) but took the loss by surrendering four runs on eight hits.
Indiana State mounted the first threat of the game in the second inning, loading the bases with two outs before Wright induced a ground ball back to the circle for the final out of the inning. The Sycamores were back at it the third inning but Wright got out of it again without any damage done and the game went to the fourth inning scoreless.
The top of the Hoosiers lineup got the top of the fourth inning started with three consecutive hits to plate the first two runs of the game. Julie DiNallo singled to right field ahead of Emily Bergeson's swinging bunt attempt that she was able to beat out at first for a base hit. Tory Yamaguchi stepped in next and lined the full count pitch over the Indiana State shortstop's head and all the way to the fence in left center to bring DiNallo and Bergeson all the way around to score and give Indiana a 2-0 lead.
In the fifth, Jennifer Glueckert reached on an infield single with one out and moved up to second on a passed ball with Julia Hamilton at the plate. Hamilton then singled to left to put runners at the corners with one out. Hamilton got into scoring position for Emily Bergeson by stealing her fifth base of the season. Bergeson tacked on two more runs with a line drive back up the middle to bring home both runners and give IU a 4-0 lead.
Wright allowed the Sycamores to score their lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single but worked the final two innings without allowing Indiana State to threaten.
The Hoosiers jump back into conference play this weekend at the IU Softball Field when the Ohio State Buckeyes come to Bloomington. The Buckeyes and Hoosiers will tango on Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday at 1 p.m.
-- With her two RBIs on Wednesday, Yamaguchi now has 99 in her career to move into fourth on the all-time list at Indiana. With one more run driven in, she will become the fourth Hoosier to drive in 100 or more runs in their Hoosier career, joining Michelle Venturella (153), Monica Armendarez (146) and Meg Montgomery (127).
-- Hamilton's stolen base was the 48th of her career, giving her sole possession of sixth place on the career list at Indiana. She needs four more to tie Jenny McDaniel for fifth with 52 swipes.
