Hoosiers Victorious In Extra Innings At Penn State
April 9, 2011
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Senior left-handed pitcher Morgan Melloh tossed a one-hitter and the Hoosiers (21-15, 3-2 Big Ten) got three RBI singles in the top of the eighth inning en route to a 3-0 win at Beard Field on the campus of Penn State University (18-15, 4-3 Big Ten). Sara Olson was 3-for-4 in the game and had one of the RBI singles in the decisive inning.
With the two teams combining for just three hits through the first seven innings, the Hoosiers pounced on an opportunity in the first extra frame. Freshman Jenna Abraham drew a leadoff walk and Heather Nelson stepped in and put down a great sacrifice bunt to advance Abraham to second. Cassie Gogreve stepped in an dropped a single to shallow left field to put runners at the corners with just one out. Samantha Heyman promptly followed by lining a two-strike pitch through the left side of the infield to plate the first run of the game.
Breanna Saucedo followed suit with a single to left field to score another run and all of a sudden the Hoosiers had a 2-0 lead and were still threatening. Amanda Wagner came off the bench as a pinch-hitter and was hit by a pitch from Jackie Hill to load the bases. Following a strikeout for the second out of the inning, Olson laced another single to left field for her seventh RBI in conference play.
Melloh (17-14) was dominant from the start in the circle, baffling the PSU hitters with a wide array of pitches that were dancing in and out of the strike zone. She finished with 12 strikeouts in the game to give her 296 on the season and 1,434 in her career. Melloh only allowed one hit in the game - a single up the middle with two outs in the seventh inning on a full count pitch.
After the Hoosiers gave her a three-run lead going to the bottom of the eighth inning, Melloh put it on cruise control and fanned the side after a leadoff walk.
The Hoosiers finished with six hits in the game - four of which came in the final inning.
