BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Sophomore Emily Bergeson drilled a bases-clearing double to the gap in left center in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally Indiana past in-state rival Indiana State on Tuesday, April 10, 6-3, at the IU Softball Field.

With the Hoosiers (19-19) trailing 3-2 entering the bottom half of the sixth, junior Jennilee Huddleston singled up the middle to put the IU rally in motion. Two outs later, junior Kari Bettenbrock singled sharply to center and senior Kim Richards followed by smashing a single to left to load the bases. Bergeson, mired in an 0-for-17 skid, busted out of her slump in a big way, sending ISU starter Darcy Wood's 1-1 offering to the fence for her sixth two-bagger of the season, putting Indiana on top for good.

Bergeson would score one play later, as the Sycamores (15-19) could not handle senior Heather Hohs' grounder, prolonging the inning.

Bergeson's heroics overshadowed a milestone from junior catcher Tory Yamaguchi, who hit a two-run home run in the first inning to tie her career-high of 11, set in 2005. After Indiana State went on top 1-0 on a Meredith Simpson's RBI single in the top half of the inning, Yamaguchi followed Huddleston's single to left with a line drive down the left field line in the bottom half of the frame to put IU up 2-1.

The score would stay that way until the sixth inning, as both Wood and Indiana starter Monica Wright settled in. The Sycamores finally got to Wright again in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with one out on a hit batter and a pair of singles by Simpson and Stephanie Spychaj. Wright got a grounder to third that Huddleston fielded and threw home for the force out, but designated player Katie Armour singled to left with two outs to score Simpson and Spychaj with the tying and go-ahead runs, respectively.

Trailing for the second time on the day, the Hoosiers countered immediately once again, answering with four runs in the bottom half of the frame and hanging on for the win.

Wright was sharp in evening her record at 12-12, allowing just three runs on six hits and three walks in 7 innings. She struck out seven, falling one short of her season high.

Wright was the beneficiary of a pair of solid defensive plays, as she and second baseman Sarah Padove teamed to pick off Simpson in the first inning, and Yamaguchi threw behind Audrey Childress to get the 2-3-6-3 caught stealing in the second.

Wood fell to 8-15 on the season, allowing six runs, five earned, on eight hits in 6 innings.

Huddleston was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored on the day, while Richards finished 2-for-3 with a run. Bergeson was 1-for-2 with a run and three RBIs. Simpson and Spychaj both collected a pair of hits for the Sycamores.

The Hoosiers return to action on Friday, April 13, when they open a two-game set at Wisconsin. Indiana will face the Badgers again on Saturday, April 14, then take on Minnesota in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 15.
