Dobson's Two-Hitter Leads Hoosiers to 4-0 Victory
April 13, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana freshman pitcher Jessica Dobson picked up her second complete game shutout of the season by allowing just two hits to the Evansville Purple Aces (12-22) in a 4-0 Hoosiers victory at the IU Softball Field. Senior Jennifer Glueckert lined a two-run single up the middle in the fifth inning to break the game open for Indiana (9-25).
Freshman Breanna Saucedo drilled a double over the third base bag to leadoff the bottom of the first inning and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior Kelli Ritchison. A sharp single to shortstop allowed Glueckert to reach first base but Saucedo held at third base. Sara Olson then hit a slow enough ground ball to third base that scored Saucedo to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, Kristin King was hit by a pitch with one out and then stole second. A rocket back to UE's Jen McKee in the circle by freshman Madison Diederich moved King to third with two outs. Junior Kelsey Stander then put down a perfect bunt in front of the plate that was far enough away from the plate that King was able to sneak in and score to make it 2-0.
Dobson may not have had her best stuff but she was effective when she needed to be and retired the Purple Aces in order in the third and fourth innings. In the fifth inning, Evansville finally broke into the hit column thanks to a single into center field by Alicia Bentancur but she was stranded at first base.
The bottom of the fifth inning Diederich was hit by a pitch to start the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stander. Saucedo collected her second hit of the game with another perfectly placed infield hit to put runners at the corners with one out. Saucedo didn't stay put at first for long as she swiped second base, her 10th stolen base of the season. Ritichison popped out for the second out, leaving it up to Gluckert to drive in the runs with two outs. The South Bend, Ind., native smacked a two-strike pitch back up the middle, plating both runs and giving the Hoosiers a 4-0 lead.
Dobson (2-3) gave up her second hit, also to Betancur, in the seventh inning but once again buckled down and kept them off the scoreboard to pick up the win. She now has both shutouts by the IU pitching staff this season.
Indiana travels to Ball State for a doubleheader on Wednesday, with the first game starting at 3 p.m. Live audio and Gametracker stats will be available through IUHoosiers.com
