Indiana Comes From Behind to Down Ohio State in Game One
April 13, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana sophomore Breanna Saucedo lined a double into right center field to drive in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning to propel the Hoosiers (23-15, 5-2 Big Ten) to a 3-2 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes (10-24, 2-5 Big Ten) at the IU Softball Field. Morgan Melloh had 15 strikeouts in the game in a dominating performance for the Hoosiers.
In the first inning, Ohio State took the lead of the game on solo home runs by Alicia Herron and Evelyn Carrillo. From there, the Buckeyes could only manage two more hits off Melloh the rest of the game.
Amanda Wagner responded with a home run of her own in the bottom of the second inning for Indiana to cut the Buckeyes lead to 2-1.
Karisa Medrano (5-13) came on in relief to start the fourth inning but the IU bats quickly adjusted to the new pitcher. Amanda Wagner drew a walk to start the inning and moved to second base on an Ohio State error. Another OSU error loaded the bases before Samantha Heyman grounded into a fielder's choice that retired Wagner at the plate for the second out of the inning. Saucedo stepped in and lined a double just over the second baseman's glove that plated two runs to give IU it's first lead of the game at 3-2.
Melloh (19-14) continued her dominance from there, recording five strikeouts over the final three innings and not allowing a ball out of the infield. She finished allowing two runs on four hits while walking two and striking out 15, to match Sarah Moulton from Minnesota for the most strikeouts in a Big Ten game this year.
