BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the winning run standing on second and two away, Indiana softball’s Kassi Farmer connected on the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh to help the Hoosiers to an 8-7 win over Penn State. The Hoosiers, who trailed the contest through the first five innings, pushed across a run in five of the eight innings played before tying it up in the sixth and eventually winning it in the eighth. Indiana now stands at 12-29-1 (4-10 Big Ten) on the season and snaps Penn State’s (12-23, 5-7 Big Ten) six-game winning streak.
After driving in the tying run in the sixth, Farmer’s walk-off single capped off a career-best performance this afternoon as she tallied a career-high four hits and plated a career-best five RBI, including a three-run homer in the first. Her four hits match teammate Natalie Lalich’s four-hit performance against Troy (Feb. 23) for the most by a Hoosier this season. Her five RBI tie for the second-most this year (Kelsey Dotson – 5 vs. Ohio State on March 28) behind Lalich’s six-RBI game against UT-Arlington on Feb. 28. In the program’s all-time record books, Farmer’s four hits tied for the second-most in a single contest, while her five RBI ties for third-most in program history.
Farmer was one of four IU players to collect multiple-hit performances at the dish. Brianna Meyer (2-for-4), Breanna Saucedo (3-for-5, 3 runs scored) and Kelsey Dotson (2-for-4) all posted multi-hit efforts, while CaraMia Tsirigos added a solo shot, her third round-tripper of the year, and Jenna Abraham singled to round out the Indiana lineup’s offense.
Brooke Boetjer started in the circle for Indiana, but Meaghan Murphy (5-11) would take over pitching duties in the third and deliver 5.1 solid innings. She scattered six hits, gave up just one earned run and struck out three in her fifth win of the season.
The Hoosiers jumped on the scoreboard first on a three-run homerun by Farmer. The sophomore drove one out in centerfield, her seventh longball of the season, to give IU an early 3-0 lead.
Penn State posted a big four-run frame in the second and added another two in the third, sending Murphy into the circle for the Hoosiers.
Trailing 6-3 in the bottom of the third, Tsirigos used one swing of the bat to cut the Nittany Lions’ lead to two on a solo shot to left.
Murphy would allow a run in the fourth, but she eventually settled in and shutout Penn State in the final four innings.
Two runs came in for Indiana in the fifth. Michelle Huber walked followed by a single from Abraham. Both would score on a double by Dotson to set the score at 7-6.
Farmer’s single in the sixth tied the game at 7-all before she provided the game-winner in the eighth. Meyer led off that final inning with a walk and moved to second on Saucedo’s infield bunt single. Tsirigos laid down a sacrifice bunt, but Meyer was tossed out at third for out number one. She connected on a 3-1 offering with a shallow single to centerfield. Penn State’s Lexi Knief made a diving attempt, but the ball would end up in her glove after it met the ground, allowing Saucedo to score from second and give Indiana an 8-7 win.
The Hoosiers will welcome Ball State this Wednesday, April 16 in a 4 p.m. doubleheader at Andy Mohr Field.
