Hoosiers Extend Win Streak to Five Games with 5-2 Win Over Indiana State
April 14, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana (25-15) extended its winning streak to five games on Thursday with a 5-2 victory over Indiana State (14-20) at the IU Softball Field. Junior Samantha Berenter laced a three-run home run in the fourth inning and Amanda Wagner lined a two-run double in the fifth inning to provide all the offense for the Hoosiers.
Jessica Dobson (1-1) got the start in the circle and went a strong 4.2 innings, giving up two runs on four hits while walking four and striking out three to earn the win. Morgan Melloh came on to get the final seven outs for the save, her first of the season and sixth of her career.
The start by Dobson ended a string of 75.1 consecutive innings pitched by Melloh, dating back to a March 20 contest against Wright State.
Indiana State broke through in the first inning with a two-out bloop single down the left field line that scored Stephanie Robinson from second base. Dobson settled down and retired seven of the next nine before the Sycamores scored another in the top of the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.
The Hoosiers did not let the lead stand for long as they responded for a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth on the Berenter home run, her first of the season. The inning started with Sara Olson being hit by the pitch and Amanda Wagner lining a single back up the middle. A pair of fly balls to the outfield resulted in two outs but Berenter worked ISU pitcher Chelsea Wallace to a hitters count and lined a shot into the left center gap that skimmed over the fence for the home run.
In the top of the fifth inning, a pair of walks by Dobson had the tying run in scoring position with two outs, prompting Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner to call on Melloh out of the bullpen. The lefty flame thrower came on to record a strikeout to end the inning and the Sycamores were never really able to get a rally going after that.
Indiana will return to the IU Softball Field this weekend for a pair of Big Ten battles against Wisconsin. Saturday's game will start at 1:00 p.m. ET while Sunday's game will begin at 12:00 p.m. and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
