Indiana "Walks" Away with 12-6 Win Over Penn State
April 14, 2012
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Hoosiers (21-18, 5-5 Big Ten) were able to take advantage of 13 walks issued by Penn State (11-23, 3-7 Big Ten) pitchers and broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning on their way to a 12-6 win at Beard Field on the Campus of Penn State University.
Shelby Gogreve had two hits, including her first career home run, and two RBI while Samanth Berenter's two-run double was the big hit in the game for Indiana. Brianna Meyer drew four walks, tying an IU single-game record, and scored two runs while Amanda Wagner was issued three free passes and drove in three runs.
Lora Olson (13-11) picked up the win in the circle for IU, going 5.0 innings and allowing six runs on five hits and five walks with two strikeouts. Meaghan Murphy came on to pitch the final two innings and did not allow a hit while fanning two.
The 12 runs scored are the most for Indiana in a Big Ten Conference game since they score 14 against Illinois on April 26, 2008. The last time IU scored 12 runs in a true Big Ten road game was May 5, 1996, at Northwestern.
In the first inning, PSU retired the first two IU batters easily but then proceeded to walk the bases loaded before escaping without any damage done. But they would not get off as easily in the second inning.
Samantha Berenter, Samantha Heyman and Jenna Abraham drew walks with one out to load the bases again. Kelsey Brannon followed with a single to left center to plate the first run of the game and Wagner followed two batters later with a double to right center to clear the bases and put Indiana on top, 4-0.
Gogreve led off the top of the third inning with a no doubt solo home run to left field, to increase the lead to 5-0.
Penn State got a run back in the bottom of the third and added another in the bottom of the fourth to trim the IU lead to 5-2. Then in the bottom of the fourth inning they exploded for four runs to take an improbable 6-5 lead.
But the lead did not last long. Wagner was hit-by-pitch to start the sixth and Meyer followed with a walk before Cassie Gogreve singled up the middle to load the bases. Shelby Gogreve lined out to second base and as they attempted to double up Cassie Gogreve at first, the throw got away that allowed everyone to advance and tie the game at 6-6. Berenter stepped in next and laced a double to deep right field that put IU back in the lead, 8-6. Heyman's bunt single continued the inning before Abraham dropped a single into shallow right field to make it 9-6 with just one out. Brannon's sac fly to right field score the 10th run of the game for the Hoosiers and they were back in control.
Murphy retired PSU in order in the sixth in her first inning of relief.
Then in the seventh, after two more walks to start the inning, Shelby Gogreve singled to right field to plate a run and Berenter's fielder's choice groundout made it 12-6.
In the seventh, Murphy allowed a base runner on a error but did not give Penn State a chance to mount a rally and preserved the win.
