Illinois Takes Game One From Indiana, 5-0

URBANA, Ill. - The Indiana Hoosiers collected just one hit against Illinois pitcher Monica Perry in a 5-0 loss in game on of a doubleheader at Eichelberger Field on Wednesday. Senior Ashley Hobbs went the distance in the circle for the Hoosiers and kept the powerful Illini offense in check and stranded nine Illinois base runners in the game.
Junior Kelli Ritchison singled to shortstop in the top of the first inning and then stole second to get into scoring position with one out. But Perry (19-10) struck out the next two batters to retire the side and end the threat.
Illinois (23-12, 6-4 Big Ten) scored its first run in the bottom of the second inning on an infield single. They added three more runs in the bottom of the third on the strength of an RBI double and an RBI single.
Indiana (7-29, 3-8 Big Ten) had its best threat in the sixth inning after Heather Nelson reached first base after striking out when the ball got away from the catcher. Ritchison followed by reaching on an error to put two runners on with one out. Perry induced a pair of groundouts that did not produce a run to maintain the 5-0 lead.
Hobbs (2-10) was saddled with the loss after giving up five runs, four earned, on ten hits with a pair of strikeouts and five walks. Perry struck out eight on her way the win for the Illini.
