Early Outburst Gives Hoosiers Series Sweep at Minnesota
April 18, 2010
MINNEAPOLIS - Indiana scored seven runs in the top of the first inning, the largest single-inning tally for the Hoosiers this season, on their way to an 8-3 win over Minnesota (15-29, 1-9 Big Ten) to clinch a series sweep. The sweep is the first for Indiana (11-27, 3-5 Big Ten) against Minnesota since the 1994 season. Junior pitcher Sara Olson was 3-for-3 with three RBI in the game and also earned her second career save.
Monica Wright (3-9) pitched the first four innings and gave up just two runs, only one earned, on six hits and two strikeouts. Olson came in to toss the final three innings and did not allow a hit but issued two walks on her way to logging the save.
Senior Kelli Ritchison was hit by a pitch from UM starting pitcher Alissa Koch (0-15) with one out and from there it was all Indiana. Senior Jennifer Glueckert reached on an error and Madison Diederich drew a walk to load the bases for Cassie Gogreve. The junior dropped a single into left center field to plate the first run. Sophomore Samantha Berenter followed with a single through the right side of the infield to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.
Olson stepped in next and drilled the Koch offering into right center field to drive in two more runs. After a failed suicide squeeze play for the second out, Kristin King drew a walk and Samantha Heyman singled to third base to load the bases again. This time is was Saucedo who hit a single back up the middle that ricocheted off the Koch in the circle and into right field, allowing two more runs to cross the plate to make it 7-0 before the Golden Gophers had a chance to bat.
Minnesota got two runs back in the bottom of the second inning thanks to the first of five IU errors in the game.
Indiana put another run on the board in the sixth inning on an RBI single to left field by Olson to make it 8-2. The Golden Gophers loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning but Olson worked out of it by allowing just one run, to make the final score 8-3.
Heyman joined Olson with multiple hits in the game, the third of the season for the freshman from El Segundo, Calif.
