Indiana Drops Road Contest to Hard-Hitting Ball State
April 18, 2012
MUNCIE, Ind. - The Hoosiers (21-21) scored first but Ball State (28-12) showed why they are one of the top hitting teams in the country in handing the Hoosiers a 12-4 loss in six innings. Cassie Gogreve hit her second home run of the season while Shelby Gogreve and Samantha Berenter both had two hits to lead the Indiana attack.
Meaghan Murphy (8-9) got the start in the circle and allowed eight runs on eight hits in three-plus innings of work and had four strikeouts. Lora Olson came on in relief and pitched the final 2.2 innings, surrendering four runs on seven hits.
After both teams went down in order in the first inning, IU broke into the scoring column first on Cassie Gogreve's two-run bomb to left field.
But the Cardinals rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to put IU in a 5-2 hole.
In the third inning, Jenna Abraham started the inning with a double to left center and moved to third base on a groundout by Shannon Cawley. On the groundout, the Cardinal first baseman threw over to third base to try to catch Abraham advancing and the throw got away from the third baseman, allowing Abraham to score an unearned run to trim the BSU lead to 5-3.
Ball State went quietly in the third inning but came alive in the fourth inning for six runs to make it 11-3 and force IU to have to score at least one run in the fifth to continue the game.
The Hoosiers did just that and it started with Shannon Cawley drawing a leadoff walk. Heather Nelson came on to pinch run for her and moved to second with one out when Brianna Meyer drew a walk. Then with two outs, Shelby Gogreve slapped a single through the right side of the infield and Nelson beat the throw to the plate to extend the game and make the score 11-4.
The Cardinals did not score in the bottom of the fifth inning thanks to a nifty double play by Amanda Wagner at third base.
When Indiana stranded the bases loaded in the top of the sixth inning - finishing the game with 10 runners left on base - Ball State got the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth to earn the win.
The Hoosiers will return home on Saturday and Sunday, welcoming Northwestern to the IU Softball Field for three games. Saturday's game will start at 12:00 p.m. with live audio available on IUHoosiers.com. Then on Sunday, both games of the doubleheader will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network with the first pitch of game one slated for 2:00 p.m. ET.
