Melloh Becomes Indiana Single-Season Strikeout Leader in 3-0 Win over Ball State
April 20, 2011
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior left-handed pitcher Morgan Melloh continued her torrid strikeout pace on Wednesday in a 3-0 shutout of Ball State with 14 strikeouts. In the processs, she cruised into the Indiana record books with 375 strikeouts on the year, surpassing Amy Unterbrink's previous record of 370 set in 1986.
"Amy set a very high record during that season, a record that has stood for a number of years," Melloh said. "I'm grateful to be mentioned in the same company as Amy and just want the team to continue to do well as we pursue a Big Ten championship."
Indiana (28-15) extended its winning streak to eight games, the longest such streak since 2007
Melloh (23-14) picked up the win in the circle, tossing her 28th complete game and ninth shutout of the season. She allowed just two hits in the contest and walked one. She started the game by striking out the side in the first and second innings and then added her seventh strikeout in the third inning. With a strikeout to start the top of the fourth inning, she needed just one more to match Unterbrink's mark and she got it with a called third strike to close the fourth. The record-setting strikeout came as the second out of the fifth inning as BSU's Lisa Rozanski went down swinging.
The Hoosiers once again did their damage in the late innings, scoring a pair of runs in the fifth to break a scoreless tie and then adding another run in the sixth. In the fifth inning, Kelsey Stander reached on a infield single with one out and moved into scoring position on a great sacrifice bunt by Samantha Heyman. Breanna Saucedo stepped in and line the first pitch she saw into center field to easily score Stander from second while advancing to second herself on the throw to the plate. Ashley Warrum followed suit with a single to right center that made the score 2-0 in favor of the Hoosiers.
The sixth inning saw Melloh lace her second double and third hit of the game to get the rally going. Jenna Abraham singled through the left side of the infield to put runners at the corners with no outs for Cassie Gogreve. The junior from South Pasadena, Calif., is one of the top IU batters with two outs and she came through once again with a single to left field to make it 3-0.
Indiana will put its eight-game overall winning streak and seven-game conference win streak on the line this weekend in East Lansing, Mich., against the Spartans. Both games are slated to start at 1:00 p.m. and will feature free live audio through IUHoosiers.com.
