Hoosiers Rally From Five-Run Deficit for 8-6 Win Versus Northwestern
April 21, 2012
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After falling behind by five runs to Northwestern in the second inning, the Indiana Hoosiers (22-21, 6-7 Big Ten) came all the way back to post a 8-6 win at the IU Softball Field on Saturday afternoon.
Meaghan Murphy (9-9) gave up four runs in the first inning and the first six batters reached base before she struck out the 7-8-9 batters in the bottom of the first inning to get out of trouble. From there, she put the game on her shoulders and kept the potent Northwestern attack at bay and allowed IU to mount its comeback. Murphy's final line showed six runs on nine hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Northwestern (17-23, 5-8 Big Ten) scored four runs in the first inning and sent nine batters to the plate and then added another run in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead just like that.
But Indiana responded in the bottom of the second inning when Amanda Wagner was hit by pitch and Meyer singled to left field to start the inning. Cassie Gogreve grounded out softly to the shortstop to allow both runners to advance into scoring position. Shelby Gogreve then reached on a throwing error by NU pitcher Meghan Lamberth to score a run and make it 5-1. Berenter followed with a sac fly to center to cut the NU lead to 5-2.
The Wildcats did not get on the board in the third inning so the Hoosiers came to the plate in their half of the inning looking to continue to chip away at the lead. Kelsey Brannon drew a one-out walk, Shannon Cawley singled to right field and Amanda Wagner poked a single through the right side of the infield to load the bases for Meyer. The freshman first baseman hit a sharp single that was knocked down by the shortstop but everyone was safe and the Hoosiers were a run closer. Cassie Gogreve followed with a walk to force home another run, making it a 5-4 Northwestern lead. Shelby Gogreve again singled to right field to tie the game before Berenter delivered a two-run single to right center to put IU in front, 7-5.
Northwestern got one run back in the top of the fourth inning but Murphy was able to navigate the heart of the lineup with minimal damage. Murphy then sat down the Wildcats in order in the fifth inning before Shelby Gogreve uncorked a solo home run to left field, her second of the season to give IU a two-run cushion, 8-6.
From there, the game was on Murphy left arm and delivered, keeping Northwestern off the board in the sixth and seventh inning for the complete game victory.
Amanda Wagner was on base three times in the game and has now been on base in 19 straight games. Indiana is now 13-1 when scoring six or more runs this season.
The Hoosiers and Wilcats with play a doubleheader on Sunday with the first game scheduled to start at 2:00 p.m. Both games of the doubleheader will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network (check local listings for channel).
