BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Indiana softball team entered the first game of the doubleheader with Ball State on Wednesday riding a four-game losing streak but senior shortstop Emily Bergeson had the only two hits for the Hoosiers and scored the game-winning run, giving the Hoosiers a 2-1 win. Sara Olson (6-10) went the distance and picked up the win by giving up a run on three hits.
Ball State (23-20) got on the board first in the top of the third inning with a two-out RBI single from Alyssa Collins. But the Hoosiers (8-32) fought back in the bottom of the frame to even the score at 1-1. Heather Nelson and Kelsey Stander drew back-to-back walks to start the inning to bring Bergeson to the plate. Bergeson dropped a single into center field that brought Nelson in from second for her 18th RBI of the season.
Olson took complete control of the game after the third inning, allowing just one Ball State hit over the final four innings to pick up the win. The complete game was the 11th of the season and the 15th of her career.
The Hoosiers took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning and it started with Bergeson's second hit of the game. She moved up to second base on a groundout by Kelli Ritchison for the second out of the inning. Jennifer Glueckert followed with a ground ball to shortstop that was fielded cleanly and thrown to first base, where Jen Reifschneider dropped the ball to allow Bergeson to score all the way from second base to give IU the 2-1 lead.
The win not only broke a four-game losing streak overall for the Hoosiers, it also broke a four-game losing streak to Ball State dating back to 2007.
