BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The Hoosiers (22-22, 6-8 Big Ten) got on the scoreboard first but the Northwestern Wildcats (18-23, 6-8 Big Ten) made a push in the middle innings and downed Indiana, 8-3, in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday at the IU Softball Field. The game was carried live on the Big Ten Network.
Indiana was led at the plate by Amanda Wagner, who was 2-for-2 with a walk and Samantha Berenter, who connected on her fourth home run of the season. Brianna Meyer and Samantha Heyman also drove in runs with a ground out and sac fly, respectively.
Lora Olson (13-13) suffered the loss in the circle for IU, going five innings and giving up seven runs on 11 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Freshman Miranda Tamayo made her first collegiate appearance in the sixth inning and went on to pitch the final two innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits and a strikeout.
In the second inning, the Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead on a sac fly to shallow center field by Heyman, but NU responded with a pair of runs in the top of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
After IU tied the game in the bottom of the third on a RBI groundout by Meyer, the Wildcats broke the game open in the fourth with three runs and then added two more in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.
Berenter struck in the bottom of the sixth inning with a solo home run down the left field line that stayed just inside the foul pole for her fourth home run of the year and seventh of her career.
But as they did the entire game, Northwestern had an answer as they plated a run in the top of the seventh thanks to an IU error and the game ended with the Hoosiers on the short end of a 8-3 score.
