No. 24 Iowa Tops Indiana With Big Fifth Inning
April 25, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team struggled on the defensive side of the field in the top of the fifth inning and No. 24 Iowa took full advantage by plating 11 runs in the inning on its way to a 12-0 win in five innings at the IU Softball Field. Samantha Berenter, Kelli Ritchison and Bridget Langan each collected hits for the Hoosiers (9-33, 3-10 Big Ten) in the game.
The Hawkeyes (37-11, 8-5 Big Ten) scored their first run of the game in the top of the first inning when a leadoff double and a single put runners at the corners. After a strikeout, Katie Brown lifted a fly ball to left field that allowed Chelsey Carmody to tag and score from third to make it 1-0.
Indiana starting pitcher Sara Olson (6-11) then settled down and retired the Hawkeyes without a threat in the second and third innings and gave up a harmless hit in the fourth to keep the Hoosiers within striking distance.
However, the Iowa bats came alive in a hurry in the top of the fifth inning, pounding out 11 hits and using three Indiana errors to score 11 runs - without the benefit of a home run. Even when IU head coach Michelle Gardner brought Ashley Hobbs on in relief, the Hawkeyes continued to hit the ball, collecting seven hits off of Hobbs to score five runs, all unearned.
Iowa's Brittany Weil (21-7) picked up the win, going four innings and giving up two hits and striking out six. Amanda Zust pitched the bottom of the fifth and allowed one hit and struck out one.
Indiana and Iowa will return to the IU Softball Field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. start. It will be Girl's Scouts Day at the field, with numerous local girl's scouts in attendance.
