No. 24 Iowa Uses Hot Hitting To Down Hoosiers
April 26, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Kristin King drew a bases loaded walk to force in a run for Indiana (9-34, 3-11 Big Ten) but it was the 24th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes (38-11, 9-5 Big Ten) that scored multiple runs in four of the five innings on their way to a 12-1 victory in five innings at the IU Softball Field on Sunday.
The Hawkeyes scored two runs in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch and then added three more runs in the top of the second inning on a home run by Colleen McGlaughlin to take a 5-0 lead against IU starting pitcher Sara Olson (6-12).
Iowa added three more runs in the top of the third inning, led by a solo home run by Katie Brown. All of this was in support of Brittany Weil (22-7), who went three innings and allowed just one hit and struckout seven. Amanda Zust came on to pitch the final two innings and she allowed one run on two hits while the Hoosiers used three walks to score the run.
In the bottom of the fourth, Olson led off with a sharp single back up the middle, one of her two hits on the day, and was followed by a one-out pinch-hit single by Samantha Berenter off Zust. Ashley Hobbs, who came on to relieve Olson in the circle in the third inning, drew a walk to load the bases. King followed and worked a full count out of Zust before laying off a pitch just below the knees on the inside corner to force home a run, her fifth RBI of the year.
Indiana continues Big Ten play this week with a Wednesday road trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan to take on No. 9 Michigan. The first game of the doubleheader will begin a 4:00 p.m. ET.
