Hoosiers Sweep Illinois and Push Win Streak to 12 Games
April 28, 2011
URBANA, Ill. - The Hoosiers (32-15, 12-2 Big Ten) had plenty of opportunities to break game two of a doubleheader at Illinois (20-20, 7-7) wide open but the three runs they were able to score proved to be enough for a 3-1 win at Eichelberger Field. Ashely Warrum had two RBI in the game while Morgan Melloh fanned 10 Illini batters on her way to her 27th win of the season.
Indiana's 12-game win streak is the longest since a 16-game streak during the 1994 season. Perhaps even more impressive that IU has won 11 straight Big Ten games, the longest such streak in school history.
Melloh (27-14) tossed her 32nd complete game of the season and now has 418 strikeouts this year. She allowed one run on three hits while walking four. It is the 80th time in her career that she has posted 10-plus strikeouts in an outing.
Indiana got on the board in the top of the second inning with a little help from Illinois starting pitcher Jackie Guy. Cassie Gogreve drew a one-out walk and Kelsey Stander reached on a infield single before Breanna Saucedo singled up the middle with two outs to load the bases. Warrum worked a walk and Sara Olson was hit by a pitch to force home two runs without the benefit of another hit.
Illinois got a run back in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Jessica Davis.
The Hoosiers rallied back in the sixth on a triple into the right center gap to drive in Samantha Heyman from first base and increase the Indiana lead to 3-1.
The Fighting Illini mounted a rally in the bottom of the seventh inning with a one out walk to start things. A single to right field followed by a walk loaded the bases with one out. UI's Alex Booker then hit a line drive to left field against a drawn-in outfield but Heather Nelson was able to track it down and make the catch with her back to home plate for the second out. Then as the ball was brought back into the infield, the Illinois runner at first base was called out for passing the runner at second base on the play to end the game.
Jenna Abraham had two hits in the contest while Cassie Gogreve drew three walks to lead an Indiana attack that stranded 12 runners on base in the game.
Next up on the schedule is a pair of home contests against Iowa at the IU Softball Field. Saturday will be the annual "Pink Game" to raise awareness for the fight against Breast Cancer. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on BigTenNetwork.com (fee required).
