Hoosiers Drop Game Two of Twinbill at Iowa
April 28, 2012
IOWA CITY, Iowa - Coming off a dramatic win in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday at Iowa, the Hoosiers and Hawkeyes looked to be headed in the same direction in game two. But the Hawkeyes broke the second game open with four runs in the fifth inning to hand Indiana a 4-0 loss at Pearl Field.
Lora Olson (13-14) suffered the loss, allowing four runs - three earned - on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Miranda Tamayo came on in relief and issued a leadoff walk in the sixth but worked around it to keep Iowa off the board.
Indiana (24-24, 8-9 Big Ten) got singles from Shannon Cawley in the first and Cassie Gogreve in the second but could not push across a run against Iowa starting pitcher Chelsea Lyon. Iowa (22-24, 11-6) also struggled to get anything going against Olson in the early part of the game.
But then in the fifth inning, Johnnie Dowling laced a triple to left center with the bases loaded to plate three runs. Megan Blank followed with a double off the right field wall to score Dowling and make the score 4-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
The Hoosiers were not able to dent the scoreboard in their final two at bats against Lyon and went on to split the doubleheader.
Indiana and Iowa will play on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. ET.
