Hoosiers Drop Game Two At No. 8 Michigan, 7-1
April 29, 2009
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Indiana (9-36, 3-13 Big Ten) got hits from Kristin King and Ashley Hobbs in the fifth inning to help manufacture a run but No. 8 Michigan (36-9, 12-2 Big Ten) once again used the home run to pull away for a 7-1 win in game two of a doubleheader at Alumni Field.
The Hoosiers broke through in the top of the fifth inning when Bridget Langan drew a one-out walk ahead of back-to-back singles up the middle by Hobbs and King to load the bases. A strikeout was the second out of the inning and brought Emily Bergeson to the plate. The senior hit a hard ground ball to third base that went in and out of the glove of UM's Maggie Viefhaus at third base for an error and allowed a run to score.
Those two hits would be all the Hoosiers would be able to mount against Michigan starting pitcher Jordan Taylor (15-4), who picked up the win. She went all seven games and struck out 13 and walked just one.
Ashley Hobbs (3-13) started in the circle and took the loss for Indiana, giving up four runs on five hits. Sara Olson came on in relief and surrendered three runs on five hits and struck out two in four innings of work.
Dorian Shaw and Nikki Nemitz each hit solo home runs for Michigan while Bree Evans was 4-for-4 with two RBI in the game.
Indiana travels to Penn State this weekend for a pair of games that will be broadcast LIVE on the Big Ten Network. On Saturday, the first pitch will be at 4:00 p.m. and then Sunday's game will start at 11:00 a.m.
