Indiana Falls to Iowa in Series Finale
April 29, 2012
IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Indiana Hoosiers were only able to muster a pair of hits off Iowa starting pitcher Kayle Massey and the Hawkeyes took advantage of some miscues by the Hoosiers to hand IU a 10-0 loss in five innings at Pearl Field.
The Hawkeyes (23-24, 12-6 Big Ten) plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning against IU starting pitcher Meaghan Murpy (11-11). The Hoosiers then had their best threat of the game in the top of the second inning as Amanda Wagner and Brianna Meyer both singled to start the frame. Cassie Gogreve's sac bunt moved them into scoring position but would be stranded there to end the inning.
Iowa added four more runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth inning as the rain started to fall.
Murphy allowed seven runs - six earned - on seven hits in 2.1 innings of work. Lora Olson came on in relief and surrendered three runs - two earned - on three hits in 1.2 innings of work.
The Hoosiers return home next weekend when Nebraska comes to town in the final home series for Indiana. The doubleheader on Saturday begins at 2:00 p.m. and then Sunday's single game will be preceded by a brief ceremony recognizing the four seniors on the IU roster - Samantha Berenter, Lindsay Callanan, Cassie Gogreve and Heather Nelson.
