UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -
Indiana's Jennifer Glueckert collected three runs batted in and Sara Olson went the distance for her seventh win of the year in the Hoosiers 4-3 win over Penn State at Nittany Lion Field on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
Glueckert drilled a two-run triple in the third inning for Indiana (10-36, 4-13 Big Ten) and then just missed a home run with a triple off the wall in right field to plate what would prove to be the game-winning run in the fifth.
Olson (7-13) was able to work out of a couple jams in the late innings, stranding eight Nittany Lions on base, to pick up the win. She allowed three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out three.
Ashley Hobbs led off the top of the third inning with a double to right center field, her first of the season, and was replaced by pinch-runner Heather Nelson. Nelson moved over to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Kristin King and came in to score on an RBI groundout by Kelli Ritchison. The inning was not over as Emily Bergeson drew a two out walk before Kelsey Stander reached on a throwing error by the Nittany Lions to put two runners in scoring position for Jennifer Glueckert. The junior from South Bend hit the 0-1 pitch off the wall in center field to score two runs and give Indiana a 3-1 lead.
Glueckert was in the middle the Hoosiers' rally in the top of the fifth inning when she belted her fourth triple of the season over the right fielders' head that brought home Kelsey Stander from first, who reached on an error.
Penn State (18-25, 6-11 Big Ten) got a two-run home run from Danee Collett in the bottom of the sixth to bring the Nittany Lions within a run. Jackie Hill (13-10) took the loss, allowing four runs but just one was earned and striking out seven.
The game was broadcast live on the Big Ten Network and fans can check www.bigtennetwork.com for dates and times of when the game will be replayed.
