Hoosiers Earn A Tough 3-2 Win At Purdue
May 8, 2010
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The IU Softball team jumped out an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning and redshirt senior Monica Wright made it stand in a 3-2 Indiana victory at the Varsity Softball Complex. It is the first Indiana win at Purdue since 2006 and the first victory against the Boilermakers for any of the six IU seniors.
Senior Jennifer Glueckert had an RBI single in the first and Sara Olson followed two batters later with a two-run home run to center, her eighth of the season and 17th of her career. Olson now stands in ninth place all by herself on the all-time home run list at IU.
Wright (4-12) was spectacular in the circle, spotting pitches on both sides of the plate throughout the whie game. She picked up her sixth complete game, allowing just two hits and two runs, but only one was earned.
In the top of the first inning, freshman Breanna Saucedo ledoff with a single to first base and moved to second base on an illegal pitch by PU starting pitcher Suzie Rzegocki. Glueckert then laced a single up the middle to score Saucedo, her 13th RBI of the year. Freshman Amanda Wagner then put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Glueckert into scoring position at second base. Olson stepped in next and wasted little time extending the IU lead, depositing the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for a home run.
In five career games against Purdue, Olson is now hitting .313 with three home runs and seven RBI.
From there, Wright put it in cruise control and it was a relatively smooth ride through the game, with the exception of the second inning. Three consecutive errors by the Hoosiers' infield had the Hoosiers lead down to 3-1 and runners at second and third with one out. Wright buckled down and struckout the next two batters to put the momentum back in the Indiana dugout.
Purdue got another run back in the sixth inning when Molly Garst doubled to center and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and then came in to score on a sacrifice fly to make it 3-2.
Saucedo finished the game with two hits and a run scored, her 14th multi-hit game of the season.
