Hoosiers Fall at Northwestern To End Win Streak at 15 Games
May 8, 2011
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana Hoosiers (35-16, 15-3 Big Ten) saw their 15-game win streak come to a close on Sunday in a 4-1 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats (23-18, 5-11 Big Ten) at Drysdale Field. Samantha Heyman led the IU offense with two of the team's four hits in the game but it was a grand slam by Marisa Bast in the fifth inning that provided all the offense for the Wildcats.
The 15-game win streak is the longest since a 16-game win streak during the 1994 season and the loss also ends the Hoosiers Big Ten win streak at 14 games, the longest in school history.
Indiana put Northwestern on its heels right away in the first inning with a two-out rally. Sara Olson was hit by a pitch for the 18th time this season - the most in the Big Ten. Amanda Wagner followed with a walk and Morgan Melloh was hit by pitch to load the bases. Jenna Abraham stepped in next and was hit by pitch to force home the first run of the game for the Hoosiers without the benefit of a hit.
Morgan Melloh was able to keep the Wildcats off the board in the bottom of the first inning when she got Michelle Batts on a called third strike. And that came after Heyman threw out Emily Allard at the plate trying to score on a single by Bast.
Melloh (30-15) final line showed four runs allowed - three earned - on five hits while walking four and striking out four. She now has 202 strikeouts in Big Ten play this season to become just the second pitcher in conference history to surpass the 200 strikeout mark. She is just 17 strikeouts away from tying the single season record for strikeouts in conference games.
Northwestern's Jessica Smith (8-10) picked up the win, giving up one run on four hits and walking one to go with four strikeouts.
Indiana will host Purdue on Friday and Saturday this week to close out the regular season. Friday's game will start at 4:00 p.m. ET and will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. Saturday's game will begin at 1:00 p.m. and with Senior Day festivities starting 15 minutes prior to first pitch to recognize seniors Sara Olson, Morgan Melloh and Kelsey Stander.
