May 9, 2010
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Indiana (12-35, 4-13 Big Ten) earned a weekend split at Purdue (27-25, 8-8 Big Ten) after the Boilermakers came away with a 5-0 victory at the Varsity Softball Complex. Indiana freshman Breanna Saucedo was 2-for-4 to pace the IU offense.
The Hoosiers finished the game with four hits, as Samantha Berenter and Kelsey Stander accounted for the other two in addition to Saucedo's pair. Indiana stranded 12 runners on base in the game, capped off by a stranding the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
In the fourth inning, Purdue starting pitcher Suzie Rzegocki walked the first two batters. Erika Petruzzi (5-3) came in relief after Rzegocki was ejected and Petruzzi pitched the final 3.2 innings to pick up the win. She allowed just two hits, walked three and struck out one in her outing.
Purdue scored two runs in the third inning on an RBI single by Molly Garst and another on an RBI single from Alexander through the right side.
IU's Monica Wright (4-13) went the distance in the circle and pitched well but made one mistake in the fifth inning and Purdue's Jenna Alexander hit a three-run home run to break open a two-run game. Wright's final line showed five runs allowed, four earned, on five hits while walking three and three strikeouts.
Indiana will host Penn State next Friday and Saturday (May 14-15) at the IU Softball Field. Friday's game will start at 4 p.m. and Saturday's contest will feature a 1 p.m. start with the Senior Day ceremony taking place before the game.
