Hoosiers' Season Closes With 6-3 Loss At B1G Softball Tournament
May 9, 2013
LINCOLN, Neb. - The Indiana softball team's 2013 campaign came to a close this afternoon, as the No. 12-seeded Hoosiers were eliminated from the Big Ten Softball Tournament with a 6-2 loss to No. 5 Northwestern. Indiana finishes the season at 19-35 and 3-19 in Big Ten Conference games.
Indiana had plenty of opportunities to score and loaded the bases four times, but the Hoosiers would only bring in two runs in those situations on a bases-loaded walk in the fourth and a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the seventh. In total, the Hoosiers stranded 14 runners this afternoon.
The Wildcats touched IU pitchers for 11 hits including three homeruns, while Indiana recorded five hits on the day. Amanda Wagner reached base in all four of her plate appearances on a pair of singles and was hit by a pitch twice. Kassi Farmer homered, Jenna Abraham tripled and Samantha Heyman singled to round out the Indiana offense.
Northwestern used a solo shot from Anna Edwards to plate the first run of the ballgame and give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second.
In the top of the third, Abraham tripled to left-center to start the frame for the Hoosiers. Wagner was hit by a pitch to place a pair of runners on the corners for Heyman. The senior put a ground ball in play, but it would not be enough to push across a run, as Abraham was checked back before Heyman was thrown out at first for out number one. After Brianna Meyer walked, Shannon Cawley hit a bases-loaded grounder to the shortstop, but Abraham was gunned down at home for out number two. A ball hit on the ground to the pitcher would eventually end the inning and strand three IU base runners.
A four-run, third for Northwestern increased Indiana's deficit to five, but the Hoosiers would respond with a pair of runs in the fourth. Farmer hit her third career homerun to start the inning and provide Indiana with its first run of the ballgame. IU eventually loaded the bases after a pair of walks and a Wagner single to left. Meyer followed with a bases-loaded walk to bring in another run, but a ground ball out would strand three to end the top of the frame.
After the Wildcats connected on their third homerun of the game to take a 6-2 lead, the Hoosiers again threatened in the sixth. Indiana loaded the bases for the third time this game, but again IU could not manufacture a run and stranded its ninth, 10th and 11th runners of the contest.
Down to its final out, Indiana again loaded the bases to bring Wagner to the plate in the top of the seventh. The senior was hit by a pitch to cut the Wildcats lead in half, but a strikeout again left three runners on and ended the Hoosiers' season with a 6-3 loss.
Meaghan Murphy is dealt the loss in the Hoosiers' season finale and finishes the year at 12-16. Through 2.1 innings, Murphy gave up four runs on five hits while striking out one. Lora Olson would toss the next 3.0 innings for Indiana and allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits. Brooke Boetjer closed out the remainder of the contest with 0.2 scoreless innings.
