Indiana Completes Sweep of IUPUI With 8-0 Win in Game Two
Sept. 25, 2010
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - All-American pitcher Morgan Melloh made her Indiana debut on Saturady after transferring from Fresno State and was as good as advertised, striking out eight and allowing one hit in five innings to earn the win. Senior Sara Olson delivered the big blow in the bottom of the first inning with a grand slam.
"It was great to get the team out on the field and put them in game situations for the first time as a team," head coach Michelle Gardner said. "It was good to get two wins but it was more important to have them on the field and start to get some experience for the younger players."
Melloh sat down the first three IUPUI batters in order and the Indiana lineup didn't waste any time giving her run support. Breanna Saucedo reached on an infield single and Heather Nelson followed with a walk. Melloh stepped in next and put down a perfectly placed bunt to load the bases for Olson. The Orland Park native then drilled a no-doubt home run over the fence in left center to give Indiana a 4-0 lead. The offense did not stop there in the first inning as freshman Meaghan Murphy hit a towering home run down the left field line that just cleared the fence to make it 6-0 in favor of Indiana.
Melloh gave up a single in the second inning but that was the only offense the Jaguars could muster the rest of the day against the dominating lefty.
Indiana put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Amanda Wagner and then an error on the IUPUI second baseman allowed the eighth run to score to invoke the run-rule.
Indiana will travel to Indiana State for a pair of games on Sunday against Kirkwood Community College at 12:30 p.m. and Butler at 4:00 p.m.
