BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Head Coach Michelle Gardner and the Indiana softball team wrapped up the fall portion of the schedule on Saturday with three victories at the IU Softball Field as part of the Hoosier Fall Classic. The Hoosiers defeated Saint Mary-of-the-Woods in the first game and then swept a doubleheader against IU Southeast.

"The fall is always an important time for the team because we are able to get the new players into game situations," Gardner said. "Overall, I thought we did a lot of things really good during practice and the games. We found some things that we can work on but as a group there was a lot of improvement over the course of the fall and we are really looking forward to the 2011 season."

Below are game-by-game recaps from the Hoosiers' three games on Saturday (NOTE: the 8-run mercy rule was not in effect to allow the teams to get as many at bats and innings pitched as possible):

    Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College - 3
    Indiana - 18
Some sloppy defense in the first inning allowed the Pomeroys to plate three runs, two of which were unearned. In the bottom of the second inning, Indiana responded in a big way with seven runs to take a 7-3 lead and never looked back. Freshman Shelby Gogreve started the scoring with a bunt single that drove in the first run. Samantha Berenter followed with a two-run double to tie the game. Later in the inning, Samantha Heyman, Breanna Saucedo, Lindsay Callanan and Amanda Wagner all drove in runs.

In the fourth inning, Wagner laced an RBI double down the left field line and freshman Meaghan Murphy singled in another run to make it 9-3 through four innings. An inning later, Saucedo registered her second RBI hit of the game and Madison Diederich followed with a three-run double to right center to up the lead to 14-3. The Hoosiers added four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 18-3.

Senior Sara Olson pitched the first four innings and gave up three runs - one earned - on three hits while walking two and striking out a pair. Murphy pitched the final three innings and allowed just one hit and a walk to go along with one strikeout.

    Indiana - 17
    IU Southeast - 0
Senior pitcher Morgan Melloh was the story in this one as she went the distance in the circle and did not allow the Grenadiers to register a hit. She struck out 14 batters in the game and issued one walk to narrowly miss a perfect game.

The Indiana offense put up five runs in the second inning led by a bunt single by Heyman, an RBI groudout by Callanan and an RBI double by Melloh. In the third inning, the IU bats added three more runs to take an 8-0 lead. Saucedo's infield RBI single, a single to left field by Murphy and an infield single by Melloh provided the damage.

The score remained 8-0 until the top of the seventh inning, when it was Diederich that again drilled a pitch to right field with the bases loaded to clear the bases and up the IU lead to 11-0. Freshman Kristy Pasley's RBI single later in the inning made it 13-0 and then Amanda Wagner stepped into the box with the bases loaded and lifted a towering shot to center field for a grand slam and a 17-0 lead.

    IU Southeast - 1
    Indiana - 9
Sophomore pitcher Jessica Dobson pitched the first five innings and allowed just one run in the first inning and settled down from there to keep the IU Southeast lineup at bay. Murphy came on in relief again to allow just one hit over the final two innings while fanning three.

At the plate, Indiana was led by Lindsay Callanan's 2-for-3 day at the plate with three RBI and Amanda Wagner's three-run home run in the third inning to give the Hoosiers the lead.

In the fourth inning, IU broke it open with four runs thanks to a three-run double down the left field line by Callanan. Later in the inning, Sara Olson lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score the Hoosiers' fourth run of the frame. Samantha Berenter's RBI single in the sixth inning rounded out the scoring for IU and gave them the 9-1 victory.
