    Go Hoosiers!
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - As the season nears, the Indiana softball team continued its preparation in its second week of practice. The Hoosiers worked on their base running, before taking to the batting cages for some swings with head coach Stacey Phillips and assistant coach Sheri Savko. The pitchers worked out together, stretching and working on signs with assistant coach Stormy Hanson. Afterwards, the Cream and Crimson had a team meeting detailing the day in practice, as well as making sure everybody was on the same page with team signs. Head coach Stacey Phillips along with senior Katie Witham, junior Lauren Hines and freshman Jennilee Huddleston share their thoughts after practice was over.

    Stacey Phillips
    Head Coach

On not being able to practice outside:

    SP:
"We try to get a lot of hitting in, as well as communication. Communication on defense and on the basepaths will be important for us this year, and even though we are indoors, we can still practice that and make sure we are all on the same page."

On who has improved the most since fall practice:

    SP:
"I feel that everyone has really improved since the fall and we have all made strides as a team. One freshman that has really come on is Jennilee Huddleston. She is learning a new position (short stop), but she is real athletic and has done a great job preparing and learning."

    Katie Witham
    Sr./Pitcher

On does she feel like she has to be a leader because she is a senior:

    KW:
"In some ways yes, because I am one of the elders of the team. For the most part, we really try to work, as a team rather then just the upperclassman be leaders. We are all in this together so I don't feel like I have to say something because I am a senior, but we are all leaders here and we will all help each other out."

    On the pitching staff:

    KW:
"We look amazing. I am so excited to see us pitch. We have been working so hard as a staff and this year we are going to work together as a whole rather then in previous years."

On the difference between this year's team and other year's:

    KW:
"We have a high morale as a team. As a whole, players, coaches, staff, we are all working together to improve and play to our potential."

    Lauren Hines
    Jr./Outfield

On the mix of younger and older player's:

    LH:
"I am very excited about the start of the year. The older and younger player's really get along and we all compliment each other well."

On the pressure of being counted on as one of the teams offensive leaders:

    LH:
"There is always that pressure on you to perform, but this is a team game and we know that we have to all help out. If some one cant come through, then someone else has to step up and drive in runs. As long as we play together as a team, we will be fine."

On not being able to practice outside:

    LH:
"Basically, we have to just get in as many reps as we can in here (Mellencamp Pavilion). It will be nice to put the cleats on and play on dirt, but we have done it every year since I have been here so we just have to prepare that much harder."

    Jennilee Huddleston
    Fr./Short Stop

On what she has worked on the most since fall practice:

    JH:
"I was moved to short stop so I have been really working hard to learn the position and be the best I can be there. I have also been working on my hitting and getting use to playing at this level."

On the excitement of opening day:

    JH:
"It has always been my dream to play in Divison I, so just being in this atmosphere and playing against these teams and pitchers that I have been reading about makes everything exciting right now."

    On the upperclassmen:

JH: "They are great leaders. A lot of them have taken us under their wings and show us how hard you have to work and how competitive the conference will be."
