One Week Until Season Opener
Jan. 30, 2009
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team is gearing up for the start of the 2009 season, which is now less than a week away. The Hoosiers will travel to the West Coast for the Stacy Winsberg Memorial tournament hosted by UCLA. They will play five games in the tournament, including two against teams ranked in the NFCA/USA Today Coaches Preseason poll (No. 4 UCLA and No. 25 San Diego State).
The has been change in the originally listed schedule for tournament next weekend. Indiana will still play the University of the Pacific on Saturday, Feb. 7 but the start time has been moved to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.
IUHoosiers.com sat down with first year head coach Michelle Gardner to find out how practice has progressed to this point and what she will focus on as the first games gets closer and closer.
On how practice has been to this point:
"The thing that I like is that we have a facility that we can put together a lot of things and do things that some schools aren't able to do with our current weather situation. At the same time, it's still not the same as being outside on the dirt and grass. So we are preparing as much as we can for next weekend to be outside playing."
On what the focus has been in practice to this point:
On when to start preparing for the other teams:
"I think we just need to focus on what we can control and that is our team. We can't really worry about playing anyone else right now. We need to continue to work on our business and playing our game and putting together our approach, which is going to be our approach for most teams as we go throughout the year. Right now we want to go into each game and be competitive, play with energy and fundamentals. If we can take care of both of those things we will be the game more times than not and that's what I want. And we want to do more than just be in the game, we need to learn how to finish a game."
