BLOOMINGTON, Ind., - The Indiana softball team has been practicing inside Mellencamp Pavilion over the past three weeks in preparation for its season opener in two weeks against Fresno State University at the Campbell-Cartier Tournament in San Diego Calif.

"We started out working on the fundamentals, both at the plate and defensively," Indiana head coach Stacey Phillips said, "and now we are moving onto more situational hitting as we get closer to the start of the season."

The Hoosiers have 16 players returning from last year, led by a trio of seniors. Senior Tory Yamaguchi will handle most of the catching duties this season and is coming of a 2007 campaign that saw her hit just under .300. Jennilee Huddleston, the Hoosiers' leading hitter from last year also returns and will anchor the infield at third base. The outfield will be led by Julia Hamilton in center field who committed just two errors in 52 games a season ago.

Coach Phillips also has the top two pitchers from last year back as well, in Jennifer Moore and Monica Wright, who will be relied upon to carry the IU pitching staff.

"The team has really worked hard this off-season," Phillips said, "and they are eager to get the 2008 season started in a couple weeks."
