IU Set for Vegas
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Indiana Hoosiers softball team will open its season this weekend, Feb. 4-6, as the Cream and Crimson travel to Las Vegas, Nev., to participate in the Alexis Resort Classic. IU opens with Cal-State Northridge on Friday, Feb. 4, at 11:15 a.m. (PST). Indiana will also face UTEP, UNLV, Utah State and Marshall in the tournament.
The Hoosiers are 20-10-1 all-time in season openers. This is just the fourth time in school history that IU will start its season in the pacific time zone. In 1989, Indiana started its season in Sunnyvale, Calif., while in 1996 and 1997, the Hoosiers started the year with a trip to Arizona State. All three were successful trips though, as IU walked away with wins in each contest. Indiana also went on to post winning seasons all three years.
HITTING THE ROAD
The Hoosiers will hit the road for their first 25 games of the season. With tournaments in Las Vegas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Western Kentucky and California, IU will play in five states, three time zones and cover 5,762 miles.
SEASON STARTS ALREADY?
Friday's game (Feb. 4) against Cal-State Northridge will be the second earliest date that the Hoosier softball program has started their season. IU began the 2002 year on Feb. 1, while last season Indiana began play on Feb. 6.
HOOSIERS FIELD YOUNG SQUAD
Indiana will have just five upperclassmen on its 2005 roster, including just two seniors (Katie Witham and Ashley Griffiths)
HOOSIERS RETURN POWER
The 2005 squad returns seven of 10 players that helped the 2004 team break the school's home run record with 34, eclipsing the previous mark of 32 by the 1994 team. With the seven players, Indiana has 76 percent of its power contingent returning, including IU's top two threats in Tory Yamaguchi (10) and Lauren Hines (6).
