Hoosiers Downed by MU
LAS VEGAS -In its final game of the Alexis Resort Classic, the Indiana softball team lost a 10-2 decision to the Marshall Thundering Herd on Sunday morning at Eller Media Stadium. IU finished the five-game tournament at 1-4, while MU improved to 4-1.
The Hoosiers took an early lead with two in the first. Senior Ashley Griffiths worked out a leadoff walk to start the game. Sophomore Heather Hohs followed with a single to center. After sophomore Tory Yamaguchi executed a sacrifice bunt, IU had two runners in scoring position with just one out.
Junior Lauren Hines got Indiana on the board first with an RBI groundout that scored Griffiths. Freshman Janetta Deaven was then hit by the pitch, putting runners on the corners with two down. Freshman Jennilee Huddleston knocked in the Hoosiers second run with an RBI single through the right side.
Marshall stormed back with a three-run third. With two outs, the Thundering Herd connected on four straight hits, including three doubles, to take a 3-2 lead.
Marshall added three more in the fourth and four in the sixth earn the victory.
Junior Megan Roark (1-1) was charged with her first loss of the season. Roark went 3 2/3 innings allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits. Senior Katie Witham tossed the final 1 2/3 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits.
Amanda Luers (1-0) was the winner for Marshall. She went the distance allowing just those two runs and four hits.
Indiana will have nearly two weeks off before heading back on diamond. The Hoosiers will travel to Baton Rouge, La., to participate in the LSU Tournament from Feb. 18-20. IU will square off against Grambling, LSU and Southern in the three-day event.
