Feb. 15, 2012
The Hoosiers opened the 2012 campaign with a victory over UIC at the Hotel Encanto Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M., last weekend, the first win in a season opener for IU since 2007 and the first-ever for head coach Michelle Gardner. Indiana followed the win with losses to New Mexico State and Saint Mary's before a run-rule victory over Santa Clara.
This weekend, the Hoosiers head west yet again to take part in the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, hosted by UNLV. Indiana played in this same tournament in 2010 and went 2-3 with wins against Boise State and Oregon. The Hoosiers also played Utah that year, suffering a 7-1 defeat at the hands of the Utes.
The Hoosiers return 11 letterwinners from last season's 37-18 team that advanced to the NCAA Regional in Columbia, Mo., including six starters.
ALL ABOUT ABRAHAM
Sophomore Jenna Abraham had quite the weekend for the Hoosiers in New Mexico, going 7-of-12 at the plate (.583) with two doubles, two home runs and five RBI. She hit leadoff in the order twice and was the cleanup hitter twice, showing she can hit wherever she is inserted into the lineup.
In addition to her prowess at the plate, she also robbed a home run in left field against UIC in the seventh inning for the final out of the game - a home run that would have tied the game.
Abraham was a Third Team All-Big Ten honoree as a freshman and hit .264 with two home run and 11 RBI for the year.
WAGNER FINISHES STRONG
Junior Amanda Wagner started the weekend 1-for-6 at the plate on Friday but made the adjustments on Saturday. She was 5-for-6 with a pair of home runs and five RBI. Against Saint Mary's, she hit a two-run home run and then hit another one against Santa Clara while also connecting on a RBI double against the Broncos.
The native of Burbank, Ill., now has 13 career home runs and 44 career RBI in two-plus seasons.
CASSIE CATCHES FIRE AT THE PLATE
Fifth year senior catcher Cassie Gogreve may not have the power numbers that other catchers have across the country, but time and time again she finds herself at the plate with runners in scoring position and last weekend she came through in a big way.
The South Pasadena, Calif., native hit .444 with two doubles and five RBI and she capped off the weekend by hitting a three-run double down the right field line against Santa Clara to give IU the 9-1 walk-off win in five innings.
So far this season, Gogreve is 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position after hitting .250 last year and had 10 RBI with two outs.
BATS COME ALIVE
After the first weekend of play across the country - a weekend that saw 10 of 12 Big Ten teams take the field, it was the Hoosiers offense that was noticeably improved from a season ago. The Hoosiers hit .344 as a team - the top team average among Big Ten teams.
Overall, 11 different players collected hits for the Hoosiers and six different players racked up at least one RBI.
