SOFTBALL TEAM TO BEGIN 1998 SEASON
The Hoosier softball team kicks off their 1998 season this weekend in Layfayette, LA. They
will be competing in the 12th Annual Louisiana Classic February 20-22. Other participating
teams will be Southwestern Louisiana and Baylor.
The 12th Annual Louisiana Classic takes place in Lady Cajun Park. Indiana will begin the
round robin tournament on Friday night at 6 p.m C.S.T. against Baylor. Saturday play begins
with the Hoosiers against Southwestern Louisiana at 12 p.m. C.S.T. and continues with a second
game against Baylor at 2 p.m. C.S.T. The tournament caps off with Indiana again facing
Southwestern Louisiana at 12 p.m. C.S.T.
The Hoosiers completed the 1997 season with a record of 27-21-0, with a conference mark of
11-11, good for a fifth place finish in the Big Ten. Returning from last years starting lineup
are seniors Monica Armendarez and Ashley Gayer, juniors Tracee Agee and Khara Good and
sophomores Teresa Martinez and Trina Valenica.
HEAD COACH DIANE STEPHENSON
Entering her 11th season as head coach of the Hoosiers, Stephenson has an overall record of
328-232-2 and 140-112 in Big Ten play.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
The Lady Cajuns of Southwestern Louisiana are coming off a successful 1997 season which boasted
a 46-18 record as well as an NCAA appearance and overall ranking of 13 (USA Today/NFCA). Head
Coach Yvette Girouard returns for her 18th season. The Baylor Bears are returning from a 38-22
season in 1997. Head Coach Paula Young begins her 10th season and returns with eight of nine
starters from the 1997 team.
