Complete Game Notes - Seminole Classic
The Hoosiers continue their extremely competitive non-conference slate this weekend with a trip to the Seminole Classic hosted by Florida State University. Indiana will open play on Saturday against UC Riverside followed by a matchup with the host Seminoles that evening. On Sunday, IU takes on East Carolina and Big Ten rival Michigan.
THE LAST TIME...
Here is a look at Indiana's all-time record against the teams they will play this weekend at the Seminole Classic (last meeting):
UC Riverside............1-0 (2004)
Florida State...........1-8 (1998)
East Carolina...........1-0 (1996)
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Maiese did all she could against Oklahoma State on Feb. 15 to get the Hoosiers their first win of 2009. She pitched all six innings and gave up just one run, in the first inning, on five hits while striking out two. With the complete game, she matches her total in that category from last year. Ironically, her complete game in 2008 came almost exactly one year prior, as she pitched 7.0 innings against UCSB on Feb. 16 in San Diego.
To further compare last year to this year for Maiese, she got the start in the circle five times last year and made it through the fourth inning just once - her seven inning outing against UCSB.
This season, Maiese has made two starts and gone 4.1 innings and 6.0 innings. Other dramatic improvements can be seen in her control as she walked 16 batters combined in her first two starts last year while this year she has issued just five free passes in two starts.
TWO FOR ONE
Sophomore catcher Brittany Stein entered the game against North Carolina State still looking for her first base hit of the 2009 season. She stepped to the plate in the sixth inning after Samantha Berenter had just drawn a walk to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Stein. Stein connected on the 1-0 pitch and drilled it over the fence in left center field to tie the score at 2-2 with the Wolfpack.
Indiana head coach Michelle Gardner has pulled the right strings so far this season when bringing in a relief pitcher. Through the first seven games, Gardner has had to bring in a relief pitcher on nine occasions. And in each of those occasions, the pitcher has retired the first batter they have faced. Looking even farther into it, the pitchers have struckout the first batter they have faced six times while the other three outs came on two popouts and a weak ground ball to first base.
Here's a look at each occasion:
Opponent Pitcher Result
Cal Poly Hobbs Strikeout
Cal Poly Maiese Strikeout
Pacific Olson Strikeout
UCLA Hobbs Foul Out
UCLA Olson Strikeout
CS Fullerton Wright Groundout
CS Fullerton Olson Strikeout
Oklahoma State Maiese Popout
NC State Hobbs Strikeout
Junior outfielder Jennifer Glueckert enters the weekend riding a four-game hit streak after collecting a hit in all three games in Houston last weekend. The streak started against Pacific on Feb. 7 with a single and continued against Cal State Fullerton as she drew a walk and put down a sacrifice bunt so she did not register a plate appearance. Then in Houston, the South Bend native logged a single against Oklahoma State on Saturday and then followed that up with a 2-for-3 effort against North Carolina State and finished the weekend with a single against Oklahoma State
