IU Suffers Setback
BATON ROUGE, La. - The Indiana softball team ended the Tiger Classic with a 6-0 setback to Southern University on Sunday morning. With the loss, IU fell to 3-6, while Southern improved to 5-5.
The Lady Jaguars took an early 2-0 lead with a run in the first and second. Both runs were unearned due to two Indiana errors.
Indiana had their opportunities to score, leaving a runner in scoring position in the first, second, third and fourth inning. IU's best chance to get on the board came in the third. The Hoosiers had first and second with no outs, but they were unable to land a key hit as a strikeout and two groundouts ended the threat.
SU then added a run in the fourth to take a 3-0 advantage. They would put the game away with three runs in the fifth.
Senior Katie Witham (1-2) took the loss. The hurler went 4 1/3 innings giving up six runs, three earned, on eight hits. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
Samisha Bledsoe (2-1) picked up the victory for Southern. She pitched the complete game shutout scattering just three hits. She also had four strikeouts against no walks. Junior Megan Roark pitched 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing just two hits.
The Cream and Crimson return to action next week as the Hoosiers travel to Tulsa, Okla., to participate in the Holiday Inn-Select Tulsa Festival. The Tournament gets underway on Friday, Feb. 25. IU will take on Drake at 9 a.m. (CST) and Colorado State at 11 a.m. (CST). Indiana will also face Akron, Tulsa and Western Illinois over the weekend.
