Yamaguchi Selected 21st In National Pro Fastpitch Draft
Feb. 21, 2008
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana senior catcher Tory Yamaguchi was one of 24 current college seniors chosen in the National Pro Fastpitch draft on Tuesday, Feb. 19. Yamaguchi was selected 21st overall by the Philadelphia Force, who also held the first and second overall picks in the draft.
""It was surprising when it happened," Yamaguchi said, "because I didn't actually think it would go through. I thought I would be too old since I have redshirted twice."
The native of Woodland Hills, Calif., is knocking on the door of the career home run record at Indiana with 34, just four behind the 38 hit by Monica Armendarez. She also holds three of the top seven single season home run marks in IU history, increasing her total each season and already has one round-tripper this season through five games.
"Tory is a great fit for the National Pro Fastpitch league," Indiana softball head coach Stacey Phillips said. "She works hard, loves the sport, would like to coach in the future, and is a very talented hitter and catcher. With all that said, I was thrilled for Tory that she was recognized as one of the top seniors in the nation."
"I don't think I've ever been to Philadelphia," Yamaguchi said, "but I'm looking forward to it."
Yamaguchi and the Hoosiers will continue the 2008 season on Feb. 29 in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Frost Classic. Their first game will be at 9:45 a.m. against Connecticut.
