Hoosiers Drop a Pair
TULSA, Okla. - The Indiana softball team dropped a pair of games as the Hoosiers fell to Drake, 5-0, and Colorado State, 4-3, in the first day of the Holiday Inn-Select Tulsa Festival on Friday at the Hardesty Sports Complex.
Against Drake (5-1), the Bulldogs used a four-run fourth to break the scoreless contest. They later added a run in the fifth.
Indiana (3-8) had its chances to score leaving seven runners on base, including five in scoring position. The Hoosiers loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but freshman Rachel Carlson popped up to third to end the threat. In the fourth, IU had runners on first and third with one out, but once again, two pop ups ended the inning. Indiana also had a runner on second with two outs in the sixth and seventh and failed to get the run home.
"We have been practicing all year on our two-out hitting," said head coach Stacey Phillips. "We had our opportunities to score, but we just were not able to get that hit."
Junior Megan Roark (2-3) started and took the loss for IU. She gave up five runs, four earned, on eight hits in five innings of work.
"Roark didn't have her best stuff," said Phillips. "We ask a lot of her, and when we are not scoring runs, it leaves it all up to the pitcher."
Jessica Hicks (3-0) tossed the complete game shutout for Drake. She scattered five hits, while striking out six and walking two.
In the second game, Indiana fell behind early as Colorado State scored two runs in the second inning. With two outs Lauren Cusick reached on an infield single. Brittany Huerta then homered to left, giving the Rams a 2-0 lead.
The Cream and Crimson came back with a run in the fourth. Sophomore Heather Hohs led off the inning with a single up the middle. She was then sacrificed to second, and later scored on a two-out double by Richards.
Both teams would threaten in the fifth, but would do no damage. Indiana wasted a leadoff double by freshman Janetta Deaven, while the Rams loaded the bases with one out. Senior Katie Witham came out of the IU pen to get the Hoosiers out of the jam with two groundouts.
With the momentum on its side, Indiana plated two runs in the sixth. Hohs was again the catalyst, leading off the frame with a single. Huddleston then hit a routine grounder to third, but an error allowed her to reach base and moved to second, while Hohs advanced to third. The Hoosiers would knot the score with one out on a passed ball, allowing Hohs to score and Huddleston to go to third. With two outs, Terry lined an RBI single to right, putting the Hoosiers out in front, 3-2.
The lead would not last long as Colorado State answered in the bottom of the sixth with its second two-run home run of the game, giving the Rams a 4-3 advantage.
IU was unable to mount a rally in the seventh.
Witham (1-3) recorded the loss for Indiana. The right-hander went one inning giving up two runs on three hits. Roark started the contest and totaled five innings pitched. She allowed two runs on five hits. She also struck out three with two walks.
Jessica Strickland (4-2) earned the complete game victory for the Rams.
Hohs ended the game at 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Richards and Terry were both 1-for-3 with an RBI apiece.
