Indiana Upends WIU
TULSA, Okla. - Freshman Rachel Carlson's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Indiana softball team a 2-1 victory over Western Illinois in the second day of the Holiday Inn-Select Tulsa Festival. The victory ended the Hoosiers four-game losing streak.
With the score tied at 1-1 heading into the last frame, Indiana mounted the game-winning rally as sophomore Tory Yamaguchi led off the inning with a single to left field. Freshman Julia Hamilton came off the bench to pinch run for her. She would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Christy Wahl. A single by freshman Janetta Deaven followed, and the Hoosiers had runners on first and third with just one out.
Freshman Kari Bettenbrock then worked out a walk to load the bases. That brought up Carlson, who came up with her first game-ending collegiate hit, a single through the left side.
Junior Megan Roark (3-3) earned the complete game victory. The right-hander allowed one run on five hits. She also struck out eight batters against just two walks.
Karenmarie Pena (2-3) was the pitcher of record for WIU. She tossed 6 1/3 innings giving up two runs on seven hits.
Indiana got on the board first with a run in the second. Deaven came up with a two-out RBI single, scoring sophomore Kim Richards.
The Westerwinds (3-3) tied the game in the top of the sixth on a leadoff solo home run by Jess Stanford.
The Cream and Crimson return to action later today, as the Hoosiers play tournament host Tulsa at 5 p.m. (CST).
