     Hoosiers Lose 3-2 Heartbreaker to SIU

    Carbondale, Ill.-- The Indiana softball team lost a 3-2 heartbreaker in the bottom of the seventh to Southern Illinois in the final game of the Southern Classic in Carbondale, Illinois. The Hoosiers dropped to 5-9 on the season while SIU moved to 9-2.

    Indiana got another stellar pitching performance from sophomore Megan Roark who pitched her first complete game of the season. Roark pitched 7.2 innings with eight strikeouts while giving up just two earned runs.

    Junior Ashley Griffiths led the Hoosiers offensively, going 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

    The Hoosiers got on the board first in the fourth inning when junior Ashley Griffiths slammed a double to right center field. After sophomore Tory Yamaguchi hit a sacrifice bunt to move Griffiths to third, senior Karly McCormack hit an infield single that scored Griffiths and put Indiana on the board, 1-0.

    Indiana got a run in the top of the fifth inning when senior Abby Stark smacked a single to left field. Freshman Kim Richards then sacrificed Stark to second, putting her in scoring position. With freshman Christy Wahl running for Stark, junior Ashley Griffiths hit her second double of the game, scoring Wahl and giving the Hoosiers the 2-0 advantage.

    Southern Illinois answered back in the sixth inning on a single by Katie Jordan that scored Alex Pepin who had singled earlier in the inning.

    In the bottom of the seventh inning, SIU's Samantha Carter started the inning off by with a single and quickly moved to third on an error by the Hoosiers. Roark then walked Lindsay Bonnell. Jordan slammed a single to left field scoring both Carter and Bonnell, winning the game for the Hoosiers.

    Next up for the Hoosiers is a road trip to Arizona next weekend, March 5-7, to the Hillenbrand Classic where they will take on Arizona, Georgia Tech, North Texas, Northern Iowa, and UTEP.
