March 4, 2000 HOOSIERS SPLIT GAMES ON DAY TWO OF THE HILLENBRAND TOURNAMENT
TUCSON, Ariz. - The Hoosiers improve to 2-6 after defeating St. Peters College 9-0 in their third game of the Hillenbrand Softball Invitational. Indiana scored five runs in the second inning to take a commanding lead. In the second inning, Senior Monica Zahasky tripled, scoring Freshman Lauren Hendrix and senior Sheri Savko. Later in the inning, sophomore Brooke Monroe doubled, scoring sophomore Monique Bullock, freshman Lisa Mattke and Monica Zahasky. In the sixth inning, the Hoosiers scored their final four runs to win the game on the eight run rule. During the Mattke inning, Indiana scored four runs on two hits. Monroe singled to center field bringing in senior Staci Meek and Lisa. Pitching for the Hoosiers was Jenny Smith who now owns a 1-0 season record.
Indiana lost the second game of the day 7-3 to Northwestern State. Indiana got off to a good start as they scored two runs in the first inning and one in the second. Northwestern State matched their effort in both innings and outscored the Hoosiers by four run in the final five innings. Teresa Martinez take the loss on the mound and fall to 0-4 on the season. Indiana is now 2-7.
The Hoosiers will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday, March 5, as they take on the Arizona Wildcats in their final game of the Hillenbrand Softball Invitational in Tucson. The game will begin at 2:00 p.m. (EST) at the Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium.
