Bloomington, Ind.The IU Softball team picked up two wins on the first day of the IU Classic when they defeated Wright State, 5-4, and shutout Western Michigan, 8-0, in six innings. The Hoosiers moved to 9-11 on the season.
Today was a great day for Indiana softball, said head coach Sara Hayes Nottger. We came out ready to play and we had a lot of energy. We picked up some wins against good teams, two teams that went to the NCAA Tournament last year. We set goals for this weekend and we accomplished all of them today.
Senior Abby Stark led the Cream and Crimson in the offense department going 3-for-5 with three doubles, one RBI and one run scored. Junior Ashley Griffiths also had a good day going 4-for-7 with a double, homerun, four RBI and three runs scored.
It was a great start for us. Our goal for this tournament was to be over .500 and we already have two wins, said Stark. I felt like I was seeing the ball well and was fortunate enough to get some good hits today.
Along with Griffiths, sophomore Mariangee Bogado and Tory Yamaguchi both slammed homeruns for Indiana.
I was seeing the ball well today and was able to take some good, hard cuts. said Griffiths. It was just great to be able to get some wins under our belts.
Sophomore Megan Roark and senior Heather Stillians combined to get the win in game one with eight strikeouts while giving up just two earned runs. Bogado pitched a two-hitter in game two for her eighth complete game and third shutout of the season.
The teams performance was really good today, said Bogado. We are working together as a seem well. I was hitting my spots well today and I was able to keep my walks down.
Indiana got on the board early when Val White walked to start the game and Griffiths slammed a homerun to center to put the Hoosiers up, 2-0.
Wright State answered back in the top of the second on an RBI single by Lauren Boggs. Erin Hanlon followed with another RBI single that scored Kristen Farley. The Raiders took the lead the third RBI single of the inning by Amy Price that scored Becky Babin and put Wright State in the lead, 3-0.
It wasnt until the fifth inning that Indiana would score again on an RBI triple by White that scored Heather Hohs from second. Hohs was running for Stark who had doubled to start off the inning. Griffiths then popped out to second, scoring White and giving the Hoosiers the 4-3 advantage.
The Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a homerun by Farley.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kim Richards doubled, scoring Bogado who had also doubled earlier in the inning, and giving the Hoosiers the lead yet again, 5-4. That was Indiana would need to secure the win.
Game two was all Indiana. As was the case with game one, the Hoosiers exploded in the first inning with three runs. Griffiths doubled and then scored on a double by McCormack. Bogado helped her pitching cause when she belted a two-run shot over the scoreboard in centerfield, putting Indiana up, 3-0.
Stark doubled again to lead off the second inning and then scored on an RBI single by Griffiths, tacking another run on to the Hoosier lead.
McCormack walked to start off the third inning. Abby Page, who was pinch-running for McCormack, scored on an error by the second baseman. Richards, who had also reached on the error, stole third and scored on a third double by Stark, giving the Hoosiers a 6-0 lead.
The game ended early in the bottom of the sixth when White singled to center. Yamaguchi slammed a homer to center to end the game thanks to the eight-run rule.
In other tournament action, Western Michigan defeated Loyola-Chicago, 5-4 and Loyola-Chicago defeated Wright State, 4-3 to end the day.
The IU Classic continues tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. when Western Michigan takes on Wright State. The Hoosiers will play at 11:45 when they face Loyola-Chicago. The consolation game will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by the championship game at 4:15 p.m.
