Indiana Edges by CSUN, 2-1
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - In the final game of a week long seven game west coast road trip, the Indiana softball team was edged by Cal State Northridge, 2-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Matador Diamond Field.
The Hoosiers (6-19) got on the board first with a run in the fifth inning. Sophomore Rachel Terry led off the frame with a double into the right-center field gap. After a wild pitch moved her to third, she came around to score on a sacrifice fly by freshman Kari Bettenbrock.
CSUN (8-7) quickly erased the IU advantage with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Heather Martin started the rally with a lead off triple. Kelly Zakosek then singled to shallow center to tie the game at 1-1. She would steal second and, with two outs, score on an RBI single by Laura Hovestreydt, giving Cal State Northridge a 2-1 lead.
Junior Megan Roark (4-12) took the hard-luck loss. The Pleasant Hills, Calif., native tossed her 10th complete game of the season giving up two runs on five hits. She also struck out four and walked just one batter.
Kia Fennell (6-3) earned the win for Northridge. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits in her seven innings of work. She also struck out six.
Indiana returns to action this weekend as the Hoosiers open their home schedule. On Saturday, March 19, the home opener will take place with a doubleheader against Western Michigan beginning at 1 p.m. Indiana will then host the IU Classic on Sunday with games against IPFW (11 a.m.) and Loyola-Chicago (3:30 p.m.).
