San Diego, Calif.-- The Indiana softball team defeated Southern Utah, 8-0 in five innings, this afternoon in the final game of the San Diego Classic. The Hoosiers improve to 14-13 on the season and 3-2 in the tournament.
Leading the Hoosiers on the mound was Mariangee Bogado who pitched four scoreless innings with eight strikeouts while giving up just two hits. Megan Roark closed out the game, pitching one inning and notching three strikeouts.
At the plate, Indiana was led by second baseman Ashley Griffiths who was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. Right fielder Val White was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Hoosier offense exploded in the second inning, scoring six runs on four hits and three Thunderbird errors. The inning started with Bogado reaching base after being hit by a pitch. With Abby Page pinch-running, designated player Lauren Hines hit a single down the left field line that scored Page. With Christy Wahl pinch-running for Hines, shortstop Kim Richards and left fielder Abby Stark both reached on a fielder's choice. Heather Stillians came in to pinch-hit for centerfielder Heather Hohs and reached on an error. The error scored Wahl and brought White to the plate. White slapped a single through the left side, scoring Richards and Stark. Griffiths then came to the plate and hit a single to right field, scoring Stillians and White and putting the Hoosiers up, 6-0.
In the top of the third, Indiana added another run when Richards slammed a double to deep left field and then scored on a grounder to second by Stark.
The Hoosiers added their eighth run of the game in the top of the fourth. Griffiths started the inning off with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sac bunt by catcher Tory Yamaguchi. First baseman Karly McCormack then hit a single to left and advanced to second on an error. Griffiths also scored on the error, giving the Hoosiers an 8-0 lead. That was all the team would need to secure the win.
