GAME INFORMATION: The Hoosiers host a doubleheader against Indiana State at the IU Softball Field Tuesday March 23 beginning at 2 p.m.
THE SERIES: IU leads 43-15. They last met in 1997, when the Sycamores swept the double header 1-0 and 8-1.
THE OPPONENT: The Sycamores enter the game 3-11, but have lost five games by only one run. Barbie Heaton and Jackie Andersonlead the Sycamores with .417 and .317 averages, respectively. ISU's top pitcher is Keri Pryzygocki with a 2.51 ERA and a 2-5 record.
HEAD COACH DIANE STEPHENSON... is in her 12th season as the Indiana head coach. She has had winning records in seven of her 11 seasons. Stephenson has accumulated a 349-275-3 (.559) career record, including a 147-128 (.534) record in Big Ten play. Her team made the NCAA Mideast Regional in 1994 and finished with a record of 49-16.
LAST WEEKEND: The Hoosiers dropped four of six at the Missouri Invitational in Columbia, Missouri. The Hoosiers started with an 8-0 loss to host Missouri then squeaked out a 4-3 win over Iowa State Friday. Saturday saw IU drop two tough games, losing 4-2 to both Tulsa and Western Michigan. The weekend concluded with an 8-0 win over Northern Iowa and a 5-4 loss to Drake Sunday.
INSTANT IMPACT: Freshman Brooke Monroe and junior college transfer Sheri Savko are putting up impresive numbers. Monroe leads the team in batting average (.339), hits (21), doubles (4), home runs (3), total bases (36) and slugging percentage (.581). Savko is second on the team with 10 RBI and is perfect in four stolen base attempts.
HITTING FAR, FAR AWAY: The Hoosiers already have 10 home runs this season after only hitting 16 in 1998 (All-American Monica Armendarez had 13). The power is also evenly distributed as only two players have more than one: freshman Brooke Monroe (3) and senior Khara Good (2).
THE .300 CLUB: Three Hoosiers are hitting above .300: freshman Brooke Monroe (.339), senior Khara Good (.323), and snior Jaime Thedford (.310).
WALK OF LIFE: Juniors Monica Zahasky (9 walks) and Staci Meek (6) are hitting .267 and .250, respectively, but have used a good eye to imto register .389 and .317 on-base percentages, respectively.
TRISH BOYD: scored as a pinch-runner against Northern Iowa.
MONIQUE BULLOCK: 1-for-2, one run, and a sacrifice vs. Yulsa...scored in the Alabama contest.
ALISON COOKE: allowed five hits and one earned run in 4.2 innings for the Win vs. Iowa State...complete game 2-1 win in game one at Chattanooga.
ERICA DEL TORO: one for two with a walk in the Pittsburgh game...two-run homer and six assists vs. Drake.
KHARA GOOD: hit a solo homer and scored another run vs. Northern Iowa...went 2-for-4 and scored vs. Western Michigan...walked twice, doubled and scored against Iowa State...2-for-3 and a run scored in the first game at Chattanooga...singled, triple, scored, and had one RBI vs. Alabama...tripled and scored against Pittsburgh...walked and a stole second vs. Drake.
SHANA GUDGEL: 1-for-2 against Northern Iowa...1-for-1 and a walk in the second game vs. Missouri.
TERESA MARTINEZ: allowed one run in five innings vs. Drake...complete game two-hit shutout vs. Northern Iowa...complete game shutout in the 1-0 win at Missouri...allowed two hits in four shutout innings in game two at Chattanooga...threw a four-hit shutout against Alabama...allowed just one earned run vs. Drake.
STACI MEEK: 2-for-3, including an RBI double in the 1-0 win at Missouri...singled and walked vs. North Carolina...singled, scored, and had one RBI vs. Pittsburgh.
BROOKE MONROE: fourth multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored vs. Drake...2-for-3, witha double and an RBI against Western Michigan...hit a two-run homer in the 2-1 win in game one at Chattanooga...made the All-Tournament team at the Bama Bash by hitting .467 (7 of 15), including a two-run homer and two doubles...had the Hoosiers only hit against Southern Mississippi...4-for-4 with a solo home run, scored twice vs. Pittsburgh.
MELISSA NAREWSKI: singled in a run against Northern Iowa...doubled for her first collegiate extra base hit vs. Iowa State...singled vs. Alabama.
